Was I the only one who was more interested in the linear algebra behind this instead of the computer stuff (and upset that the info page doesn't seem to mention anything about the math)?

That's because what they are selling is the math behind the software. They would love to tell you how it works, do you have a $100k lying around?

As Meth says the exact way it's done by Umbra will be a trade secret, but if you google for "occlusion culling" you'll find general information on how it's done.

Also, if you're a mathematician and find problems like this interesting, there is probably a place for you in the games/graphics industry.

lol @ Mac fanboys. They always crack me up.

Anything ArenaNet does to make computing graphics more fluid is okay by me. An interesting find indeed.

End of next year?! I know that is just speculation, but if that really was the case then I'm giving up Guild Wars - I'm not going to play this game for another year without serious new content!

Oh, I have a MAC, and Vista runs sweetly on it

and if your a serious gamer, Vista and DX10 is a no brainer at the moment, even for DX9 games

I'd like to see guild wars 2 multi platform in general. linux, mac and even conso,e now. mmo's on consoles never worked in the past but with current gen consoles running more like a pc it could be a great oppertunity.

putting MMOs on consoles is like putting RTS games on consoles. They are usually dumbed down and the console crowd has shown with their wallets that they aren't interested.

Final Fantasy XI is still doing rather well, and it was for PC, PS2 and xbox. On the RTS front I hear C&C 3 did quite well on xbox and had a pretty good control scheme.

So if you prefer OSX you're immediatly a "fanboy" ? Mind you i have 4 windows PCs (2 laptops and 2 desktops) and one of them runs Vista and honestly, it's the most annoying OS i've ever encountered.

I just regret you still need windows to play most games (well, bootcamp exists for a reason i guess).

And i'm pretty sure panda's will become extinct faster than mac gamers.

Hey ,quick question can a game run on 2 engines?
saw the unreal engine thread and wondering if they could use both, and if they can only use 1 then we know NCWest have 2 games that may be coming out soon using the unreal engine.

ofcorse i'm tired and may be wrong about the numbers and also by jumping to conclusions.

Star Wars:The Force Unleashed ran on 3 engines. Euphoria, DMM, and maybe Havok(I forget easily) and this was published for like all popular gaming platforms.

No, they are different parts of the system, not the game engine...

One works with the graphics, one with AI and one with the game engine, but they are bolt on parts to the various bits that they then had to shoehorn to work together

A game can only run on one game engine, but it can have several subsets of engines dedicated to AI management, physics, etc.

Havok is a sweet phyisics engine, but due to bandwidth limitations, don't hold your breath for stuff that advanced in an MMO until... like 2020.

Not sure that using a physics engine like Havok would require all that much extra bandwidth. Effects, just like graphics, are calculated on the client machine - that's why GW today has such a small footprint, using only about 1KB/s bandwidth.
Case-in-point is that there are plenty of online games which use Havok, notably Counterstrike Source.

Another issue is if MMOs, as they're presently designed, really has much use for Havok.
